What the RBI says about "demo trading"

In its press release of 10 Feb 2023, the RBI cautioned residents against unauthorised entities that facilitate forex trading through indirect means, including "demo trading" in a "simulated environment".

On where forex trading may happen, the RBI FAQ on forex (Q3) names two places: an electronic trading platform (ETP) authorised by the RBI, or a recognised exchange, namely NSE, BSE or MSE. In its words, residents are "not permitted to undertake forex transactions on unauthorised ETPs".

On contracts for difference, an RBI reply to an RTI request of 13 Jan 2023 says: "Binary trading and Contract for Difference (CFD) in foreign exchange are not permitted in India."

Forex trading itself is permitted in India on exchanges, as currency futures and options. Legal forex trading in India has the detail.

What a forex demo cannot show you

A demo runs on practice money, so the parts that involve your own money never happen in it. You never pay in, so you never see what a deposit involves, and you never take money out, so you cannot tell whether a withdrawal will work. A smooth demo also says nothing about the company behind it or whether it may offer forex trading to Indian residents.

The general guide, What a demo account is, covers what practice money can teach you.

If you want to practise within the rules

On a recognised exchange, forex trading by residents means currency futures and options.

Legal forex trading in India explains the permitted products. Practise with a plan covers stock simulators and how to use one.

How we checked

We took the top six results for "demo account for forex trading" and "free trading demo account" from the manager's Ahrefs export of 19 Oct 2026. We searched the RBI Alert List, a public page with no login, for the names of the brokers in those results, on the dates shown in the table. On 20 Oct 2026 we read the RBI press release, FAQ and RTI log linked above. We read these pages from outside India. We did not open demo accounts or visit sign-up forms, and we call no broker authorised. This page is not legal advice.

Questions

Is a forex demo account legal in India?

The RBI does not rule on demo accounts as such. It does warn about unauthorised entities that offer forex trading through "demo trading" in a "simulated environment". So the question to ask is about the broker behind the demo: search the RBI Alert List for its name first (how to check).

Is a broker safe if it is not on the Alert List?

No. The RBI says the RBI Alert List is not exhaustive. A broker that is not named on it should not be assumed to be authorised.

Does a demo account cost anything?

Opening a demo usually costs nothing. The cost comes if the broker asks you to deposit real money. Before that step, read Before a deposit.

Why does this page not recommend a demo?

We hold no verified facts about any forex demo as it is offered to someone in India, so we recommend none. What we do hold is the RBI Alert List entry for each broker in the table above.
